Before You Book Dinner: Asian vs Western Dating Differences

Dating is often confusing and complicated, but when you add different cultures into the mix, it can become even more overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be! Dating someone from a different culture can be a fun, exciting, and enlightening experience. You may have heard that Asian dating culture is very different from Western dating culture. We’re here to tell you that it’s absolutely true.

What you may not have heard is that the differences are often what makes the relationship fun and interesting. Before you go on your next date, here’s what you need to know about Asian vs. Western dating differences.

Taking the Relationship Slow

Western dating culture often feels like fitting an entire relationship into just a few short weeks. While that may generate a lot of excitement, Asian dating culture is very different. Expect things to move much slower, and be ready to spend a lot of quality time together.

If you’re someone who likes to move quickly in a relationship, it may be a bit of a shock when you’re introduced to Asian dating culture. Don’t expect to go home together on the first night, and it may take some time for your new partner to warm up to public displays of affection. Even subtle interactions can mean vastly different things when comparing Western and Asian dating differences.

Non-verbal Communication

Non-verbal communication is just as important as robust conversation, however, non-verbal communication can mean two entirely different things. For example, Western non-verbal communication may involve romantic touching, leaning into your partner during the conversation, and intense eye contact.

While that may also be true in Asian dating culture, it also means using your body to speak as much as your words. Exaggerated expressions and engaging conversation go farther than flirtatious hand brushes or lingering eye contact.

Flirting and Pickup Lines

Flirting is completely different in Asian dating culture – in Western dating culture, it’s often common to act like you’re not interested in someone as a flirting tactic. Some take it as far as being rude with underhanded compliments (we don’t recommend this, very few can pull it off!). While that may work for some, that won’t fly in Asian dating culture. Self-deprecation, underhanded compliments, and active disinterest are three easy ways to drive away attraction.

It’s important to be open, honest, and kind; acting arrogant simply isn’t attractive in Asian dating culture. If you want to flirt with someone, be honest about what you’re trying to say. Being sincere and genuine can go a long way when making a first impression and can make you even more likeable!

Outgoing Personalities

Being outgoing is the best way to get a date not only in Asian dating but virtually every dating culture in the world. People are naturally attracted to someone who likes to have fun, is adventurous and polite. At the end of the day, while there are definitely differences in Asian and Western dating, you should always strive to be kind in a relationship. No matter what kind of dating style, being kind and honest are the foundations of a successful relationship.
